A few reasons why we should abandon nuclear energy for good

no-nukesConsensus is growing that we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Proponents of nuclear energy say nuclear is the best alternative. But nuclear energy is neither clean nor green. Each step in the nuclear chain poses hazards to the environment and human health. Upstream of nuclear power plants, uranium mining and transportation of ore are highly polluting activities, which generate large amounts of greenhouse gases. Upstream activities also generate air pollutants that are detrimental to health. The situation isn’t better when it comes to the operation of nuclear plants. Three large recent studies of millions of people living near 200 nuclear facilities show, beyond any doubt, an association between the incidence of childhood leukemia, leukemia mortality and the presence of a nuclear facility, for up to 15 kilometres around the plants.

Prevent Cancer Now brings bold, hard-hitting message to the public with pilot project in Ottawastop-sign-medium

It’s no secret: We all hope we don’t get cancer. Yet consider this: On a typical day in the Ottawa region, 16 people will be told by their doctors they have cancer, according to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. In 2009, some 75,000 people will have died from cancer in Canada, with a predicted 171,000 new cases; and nearly half of all males and four in 10 females will get cancer in their lifetimes, with one in four of us dying from it (Canadian Cancer Statistics 2009, Canadian Cancer Society). Meanwhile, the search for the elusive cure for cancer continues without major breakthroughs, leaving those with cancer to face limited and often brutal treatment options.

SRB Technologies & the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

SRB Technologies is a company located in Pembroke, Ontario that makes glow-in-the-dark exit signs & other luminescent products used mostly by the military. The company, which has been operating in Pembroke since 1991, uses tritium, a radionuclide by-product of CANDU nuclear reactors that is carcinogenic, teratogenic & mutagenic. SRB is “regulated” by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission – which issues licenses to all of Canada’s nuclear facilities (e.g., Pickering, Darlington & Bruce nuclear generating stations). According to the Web site, “The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) protects the health, safety and security of Canadians as well as the environment, and respects Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.” However, many Canadians have good reason to be highly skeptical about the way the CNSC carries out their mandate.
